Announcing: GPX Splice
I'm happy to announce GPX Splice, an app for Android and iPhone that offers the easiest way to split and merge GPX files and Strava activities. In this post I'm sharing what it does exactly and where you can find it. But first, I want to give a big thank you to my readers who volunteered to beta test after my last post!
What it do?
In fact I hardly need to add anything here. The tagline I wrote in the first sentence of this post exactly encapsulates its functionality. Just remember that the app lets you split and combine GPX files and Strava activities in a very convenient way. How exactly does that work? Take a look below!
I'm sure you'll think of more use cases, but the original motivation came from my recent bike tour, undertaken without a laptop so I only had my phone. I simply wanted to merge pre- and post-lunch activities into a single one for the day, and I could not find a way to do this without resorting to crawling around the internet with a desktop user agent and pinch-zooming down to microscopic levels on every web page. Thus, this app fills that gap!
Other example uses:
- Split a recorded race activity between warm-up and race
- Split a GPX route into smaller segments so it does not crash your Wahoo bike computer
- Combine multiple day tours into a single mega activity
- Join together to- and from- GPX routes into one file
Where it at?
Please press whichever button matches your platform!
Oh, and if you want to see the source code, of course I'm making that public too. You'll find it here on GitHub; please remember to leave a star on your way through if you like it!
Wait, it's not free?!
Well, the source code is freely available, so if you're motivated, you can build it and install it to your phone yourself.
Every project I've published until now has indeed been completely free to use with zero advertisements. If you've received value from any of these projects in the past and wanted to show some appreciation, here's a way to do so while getting a neat little tool in the process.
Future Plans
The codebase has a bit of work in progress on a web version, but I left it incomplete simply because I feel like the native app is more convenient to use. Other than that, the only idea I might want to implement some day is the ability to set multiple split points at once. For example, you could separate out both the warmup and cooldown of a race or long run.
Thank you for reading, and please let me know if you have any feedback or feature requests!
